THE FAMOUS WINES OF BURGUNDY AND ITS WINE CAPITAL BEAUNE
For centuries Beaune and its surrounding vineyards have been reknowned world-wide for its
fine wines.
Many of the best wines in the world are produced here.
Beaune
Beaune, a small town full of charme and character, is the wine capital of the whole of Burgundy. There are many places of interest, amongst which are the Basilica Notre Dame, the Wine Museum and the Hôtel Dieu, the former Hospice built in the mid 15th century with its impressive Franco-Flemish early renaissance architecture. Since the middle ages Beaune has been famous for its culture and the wine trade and since the 18th century as centre of the international wine trade.
The new "Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne" covers all aspects of the history and current wine making.
Beaune is only 6 km away from Tailly
Meursault
Some of the best white wines of France, and therefore of the world, are made in Meursault. The wines are almost exclusively Chardonnay with 17 vineyards of Premier Cru. The Château de Meursault, which lies in the middle of the vineyards, has a total of about 60 ha. The Château's enormous 13th and 14th century cellars make it one of Burgundy's most attractive and impressive vineyards.
Meursault lies only 3 km from Tailly
Puligny-Montrachet
There are five Grand Cru vineyards above Puligny, producing wines exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, each of which carries the name "Montrachet". Alexandre Dumas is credited with saying about these world class wines that "one should drink them on your knees with your hat raised"! These wines are regarded as the best and amongst the most expensive white wines in the world.
Puligny-Montrachet is 5 km distant from Tailly
Pommard
In the 13th century Pommard belonged to Alix de Vergy, the wife of the Duke of Burgundy. In 1224 she gifted the commune to the Archbishop of Lyon. Therafter Pommard belonged to various aristocratic families or monasteries until the revolution of 1789 when Pommard was divided amongst the inhabitants - like almost all the vineyards in Burgundy.
The area is rich in old Roman style houses, wine cellars and Châteaux. Pommard has over 28 Premier Crus all of which are made from the Pinot Noir grape - powerful, full-bodied wines.
Pommard is only 5 km from Tailly
Romanée-Conti
The Domaine of Romanée-Conti is recognized as the most famous vineyard of Burgundy and one of the most famous in the world. It is located in the commune Vosne-Romanée, which lies just north of Nuits-Saints-George and Beaune. The vineyard was founded in the mid 13th century by Benedictine monks and belonged to the Catholic Church until 1584, after which there were several owners. In 1760 the owner was the Prince of Conti, who was dispossessed by the state during the revolution. Since the end of the 19th century the 1.63 ha vineyard, which produces an average of only 6,000 bottles per year, has been owned by the same family.
From Tailly to Romanée-Conti is about 24 km
Volnay
The vineyards of Volnay lie between Pommard and Meursault. Volnay produces mostly red wines from the Pinot Noir grape from its 240 ha, half of which is classified as "Premier Cru". The Volnay wines are regarded as finer and more elegant than their Pommard neighbours. For centuries the French Kings highly valued the Volnay wines - especially Louis XIV, the "Sun King" who made known his love of this wines.
Volnay is only 4 km away from Tailly
